This Week In Gaming – August 14th

Things are heating up as we enter the time of year for gameshows and game releases. This past week we got the first of many showcases. I’ll give my review of the THQ Nordic show and my hopes for the next few shows. There’s also a little drama (XmanFiles)

News Round Up

  • The THQ Nordic showcase left the community wide eyed with its shallowness.
  • Quakecon is this upcoming Thursday and there’s a few things I hope to see.
  • Gamescom is slated to be packed with developers and should be packed with game news.
  • Console Wars becomes the topic as each week passes with the exchanges between XBOX and PlayStation.

THQ Nordic Showcase In Retrospect

The THQ Nordic showcase was less than stellar. I blame myself for getting my hopes high enough to hope for another Darksiders game or a Timesplitters project announcement. Although it was pretty bare there were a few notable games shown. Outcast 2, Alone in the Dark, Destroy All Humans 2, the Gothic remake and (surprisingly) a new SpongeBob game. If you get the chance you should check out those trailers. At the end of the showcase there was a soft announcement that another South Park game is on the way and that there were 48 projects being worked on 25 of which are unannounced. I hope at least half of the 25 are games that we as a community are looking forward to. (XmanFiles)

Quakecon Is On The Horizon

This upcoming week Quakecon is taking place and I’m very interested in seeing what’s going to be shown at the showcase portion of this event. I quickly skimmed through last year’s Quakecon announcements and it wasn’t anything to write home about. We got gameplay for Deathloop, a re-release for the original Quake (Which I played and loved), Fallout Worlds for Fallout 76, Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part II going to the Switch, another release of Skyrim and some ESO (Elder Scrolls Online) coverage. This year I hope we get some coverage on Starfield because the first showing we got has me intrigued but not really excited. Additionally I hope we get some kind of word on Deathloop and Ghostwire Tokyo coming to XBOX as this would strengthen their 2023 release list and their Gamepass allure. Now for some completely far stretched hopes. There were rumors that there’s a Quake reboot in the works. I’d love for that to come to fruition giving us another well made, fluid shooter to play. I also hope to see MachineGames show up with an update/look at the Indiana Jones title they’re working on and the next entry in the Wolfenstein franchise. And my final unrealistic demand is a remake or remaster of the first 2 Fallout games for console. It’s been speculated that the next Fallout game is many years away and with this being said there’s more than enough of an opportunity for them to give us something to hold us over til then. The first two games were strategic point and click RPGs that have never been on console. They could either port them over to consoles or they could give them a remake in the Creation Engine (which is what I’d hope). All in all this game show has the potential to add to the excitement of next year in a unique way and I hope that’s exactly what they do.(XmanFiles)

Gamescom Will Tie This Month All Together (Hopefully)

Gamescom is set to take place later this week with the Opening Night Live show taking place on the night of the 23rd and the overall event being over on the 28th. There are a lot of premiere companies in gaming attending, including XBOX, 505 Games, Sega and WB Games. Because of this I can’t quite create expectations at all. There are so many possibilities but I really want to see some big announcement from eastern devs like Sega and Bandai Namco. I’m going to get a pizza and put my phone on “do not disturb’ because I’m very excited for this year’s Gamescom showcase and overall event.(XmanFiles)

PlayStation V XBOX: The Battle Continues

There’s not too much that hasn’t been said about this topic at this point but this acquisition has been a spectacle. Every week there’s some kind of news but this one is a contender to take the cake. I don’t know how valid this claim is but the fact they brought it up in an official government document means that there has to be some tangible proof to support it. This just shows how pivotal Gamepass is in the industry and there’s more to it than meets the eye. I wonder if there’ll be more evidence on this topic as time goes on. I’ll be following this as it develops and every time (just about) there’s a big news drop on it I’ll include a bit on it whether it be my opinion or just a recap.(XmanFiles)

Conversation Of The Week

Sorry for the delayed upload this week, I took a weekend trip to Myrtle Beach. I really enjoyed my time there and even went to a game store where I picked up a few games to add to my collection. Previous to my trip, I started the F.E.A.R. trilogy. I’m on the second game now and I’m very pleased with what I’m playing. Once again there’s another title from the 7th generation of gaming that needs to be revisited. What are you playing ? Let me know in the comments below.(XmanFiles)
