This Week In Gaming – September 10th

Our apologies for the lack of a blog last week life has taken precedence. But gaming will never die and man have I been putting the hours in. As usual there’s been a lot of moves in the industry and a lot of drama. But I’m jus gonna talk about the things that caught my interest over the past week.

This Weeks Round Up

  • D23 gave us a look at the upcoming super hero team up game from Skydance New Media.
  • The Ubisoft showcase was today and it was lackluster…
  • The latest Splatoon entry has proven that the game can be a staple in Nintendos library.
  • Lies Of P has a steady showing that continues to intrigue and impress.

Captain America And Black Panther Are Teaming Up

Disney’s “gaming” showcase had consumers fairly excited but it seems the only truly exciting thing that came from it was the announcement of the untitled Captain America x Black Panther game set during WWII from Skydance New Media. I have absolutely no idea how this game’s story will be but I’ll be sure to do some research looking into comics to see if there are any similar scenarios they could be going off of. The rest of the show had an emphasis on mobile games which is fine because there obviously a fan base there, I just wish they would have shown us some of the other games that we know are being made such as Star Wars Eclipse or the unannounced standalone Black Panther game or even the rumored to be close Star Wars Jedi Survivor game. All in all the show did seem to miss the mark but as far as I am aware this is their first attempt at a games showcase and I hope they want to continue to do them because they hold a plethora of IP under their umbrella and I could definitely see this being one of the premiere showcases in the coming years with a bit more direction and effort.

Ubisoft Forward Was Less Than What I Expected

The Ubisoft showcase was underwhelming. There was so much in my opinion that they could have talked about to make this showcase something notable but it just wasn’t. Things like The Division Mobile, Rainbow 6 Mobile, and Assassins Creed Jade brought Ubisoft Forward down in my opinion. I’m interested in Mirage because as I have said in the past, I didn’t play the older AC games when they were relevant and I’ve always wanted to. They just feel too dated and I’m convinced I’d have to be in the mood to play them all the way through. Mirage is supposed to go back to the formula that started the franchise’s fame but in a modernized way and that has my attention. They also showed a couple games that are in the future and are still under codenames. AC codename Red and AC codename Hexe. Red will take place in feudal Japan and Hexe will take place in Europe during the 16th Century. Both of these settings sound cool and have the potential to be very unique. Overall there was no gameplay shown for any of these AC announcements therefore excitement is limited by the imagination and it’s hard for me to set any expectations. In the meantime I’ll boot up OG Assassins Creed and see if I can pinpoin what was seen way back in 2007. I’ll have more to talk about when that time comes.

Splatoon Is Making A Name

I’m relatively new to the Nintendo ecosystem but I said coming in that there were 3 games I would not be without. Xenoblade Chronicles, Splatoon, and Monster Hunter. Granted I only have Monster Hunter this winter, I’ll have all the Xenoblade games and then I’ll indulge in Splatoon 3 as a Christmas special for myself. I’m very excited to see Splatoon getting high marks and being held as a fun game. This is another creative take on an already established genre that is very welcome to me. I’ll probably revisit it in the blog when that time comes around. I don’t like speaking on games that I haven’t played.

Lies Of P. Enough Said.

Lies of P proceeds to look amazing. Footage captured at Gamescom continues to be shown on YouTube and it makes me more and more excited. The game’s combat system and atmosphere is very similar to Bloodborne’s which is something I can’t stop thinking about. This year is that of the Soulsborne/Soulslike game genre with Steel Rising, Thymesia, and of course the king being Elden Ring. These games have proven to be competent If not stellar. It amazes me how this genre has grown and evolved with all the different takes and unique spins. Lies Of P looks to join the ranks of unique cult classics within the genre and I do not think it will fail to do so. Although it still doesn’t have a solid release date there will be little to no hesitation from me when it’s time to buy this game. I hope this is another engaging entry in the soulslike genre.

What I’m Playing

I’ve come down from the absolute fever that is my Destiny 2 addiction at 96 hours since the start of season 18. Although it is still very relevant in my rotation, I’ve begun playing other games again. Last Night I wrapped up the F.E.A.R. trilogy which was an absolute blast and will probably write about it some time this week. I’m playing Saints Row 4 because I canceled my preorder for the latest entry at the last second but I still had an itch to play a Saints Row game. I just started The Witcher 2 and I’m having a lot of fun playing that, It’s also reinforcing my idea of the 7th generation having the best games.A few more games that i play from time to time are XCOM: The Bureau, Mortal Shell, Ion Fury, and Edge Of Eternity. Gaming Is in full effect right now and I’m pretty sure there is about to be another golden age of gaming. So much creativity and uniqueness being shown off with some of these new titles being announced.
